Himself spotted a tree laden with fruit last week not far from the allotment gates. Fortunately we had traveled to the allotment in the camper van so out came a saucepan which we soon filled with finger staining small dark cherries. They are now morphing into cherry gin :)Annahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10794392333038962798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8983898767534428385.post-35411095040314653982018-07-24T01:51:56.872+01:002018-07-24T01:51:56.872+01:00What a bounty - you are so lucky!! But then hardly any of them matured and those that did were taken while we were on holiday by a critter that found their way under the netting I had put up. To say we were disappointed was an understatement - but there's always next year :).Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15949946977793864054noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8983898767534428385.post-54762590712800990372018-07-15T21:43:36.750+01:002018-07-15T21:43:36.750+01:00I have two sour cherry trees which produce masses ...I have two sour cherry trees which produce masses of cherries, I don't pick them due to the sugar needed to make them edible, but each year those cherry trees are stripped bare by birds. Odd that, after reading previous comments. You are certainly making the most of yours.xxxSnowbirdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08572555410663928295noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8983898767534428385.post-31477655042811537922018-07-13T09:19:02.106+01:002018-07-13T09:19:02.106+01:00They tend not to Sue, although the colour looks ap...They tend not to Sue, although the colour looks appealing. I think one taste and they give up! I agree about the amount of sugar needed - I used some to make chutney in previous years which was delicious. Just wish I could remember where I cobbled the recipe together from. Btw, I've read about a sweet white cherry, 'Vega', which birds are less tempted to eat, presuming the fruit to be unripe. Worth a try maybe.Carohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11317388242574705433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8983898767534428385.post-8202753299703625692018-07-13T09:14:24.587+01:002018-07-13T09:14:24.587+01:00Lol! It's quite hard to find what to do with sour cherries - I think I've covered all the bases now, Mark! :) You're right, sour cherries do seem to be more popular in the States and eastern Europe but we're catching up! Just seen a recipe for Pickled Cherries from Sarah Raven - one I missed earlier. You will be enjoying your cherries for quite some time, which somehow seems nicer than downing the lot immediately. BTW, I think a lot of people in the UK don't even know there is such as thing as a (deliberately) sour cherry.Mark Willishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04558305122821209520noreply@blogger.com
