One puff of wind and it's over

One puff of wind and it's over

So much for keeping a daily eye on the progress of the coral poppy...  I went away last weekend and returned to find that the plant had flowered and then dropped its petals in that time! Must have been quite a show; there were half a dozen of these fuzzy seed heads, leaving two buds still to flower.  One had opened this evening - I found it being wobbled around by high winds.  I wonder if that will still be there to photograph tomorrow morning?  With one left after this, and a busy Saturday planned, I feel the window of opportunity is closing rapidly!  Do they flower twice in a year? I hope so!

I'll leave the seed heads but I bet they'd look lovely tucked into a vase of flowers!

  1. Such a shame you missed it, seedhead is still beautiful though!

    1. Thanks Pauline, yes it is! I can only hope that it's less blustery next year!

  2. The same thing happened to me with a tree peony - it took three years to eventually form buds - I photographed the bud opening - the next day it had gone - opened, flowered and shed its petals - zilch, nada, nothing - I'll have to wait till next year now. Your poppy seed head looks like it has been carpeted or velcro'd.

    1. How frustrating Elaine! After waiting all that time, you'd think nature would have figured a way to make the flowers last a bit longer! Same with the poppies - too much wind, not enough sun. The seed head does look like velcro - I wonder if they're all like that? I haven't paid much attention before!

  3. Fingers crossed! Sadly I don't think that they flower twice.
I was surprised to see that my oriental poppies had survived the rain and wind. Flighty xx

    1. I can only wait and see, Flighty. Who knows what will happen with the British weather the way it is at the moment? If I can have freshly picked tomatoes on New Year's Day, I might be lucky! Your poppies must be much hardier than mine - how lovely to have that splash of colour on your plot. xx
